How Long to Air Fry Sausages: Temperature, Time, and Conversion Chart

Air fry sausages at 380°F (195°C) for 12–15 minutes, turning once. That converts from the standard 400°F, 20-minute oven method. Pork sausages are safe at 160°F (71°C); chicken and turkey sausages at 165°F (74°C).

How does the oven conversion work?

Oven Air fryer
Temperature 400°F / 200°C 380°F / 195°C
Time 20–25 min 12–15 min
Turning Once Once at 7 min
Preheat Yes Yes, 3 min

380°F (195°C) rather than 375°F (190°C) because sausages benefit from slightly higher heat to brown the casing, and most units offer the setting. Either works.

How long does it take by Type?

Type Temperature Time
Pork sausages (UK bangers) 380°F / 195°C 12–15 min
Breakfast links, small 380°F / 195°C 8–10 min
Italian sausage 380°F / 195°C 12–15 min
Bratwurst 380°F / 195°C 13–16 min
Chicken / turkey sausage 380°F / 195°C 11–14 min
Cocktail sausages 380°F / 195°C 6–8 min
Frozen sausages 360°F / 180°C 18–22 min
Pre-cooked / smoked 375°F / 190°C 6–8 min
Vegetarian / plant-based 375°F / 190°C 9–12 min

Pre-cooked and smoked sausages are being reheated rather than cooked, which is why they take half the time.

What internal temperature should it reach?

Type Safe internal temperature
Pork and beef sausages 160°F / 71°C
Chicken and turkey sausages 165°F / 74°C
Pre-cooked, reheating 165°F / 74°C

Sausages are ground meat, which means any surface bacteria has been mixed throughout rather than staying on the outside. That is why the target is higher than for a whole cut of the same meat, and why cooking to temperature rather than to colour matters here.

Insert the thermometer through the end, along the length, rather than through the side.

Should you prick them?

No. Pricking lets fat and moisture escape, which produces a drier sausage. The traditional argument for it — preventing bursting — is largely solved by not overheating: at 380°F (195°C) rather than 400°F (205°C), and turned once, quality sausages hold together.

Cheaper sausages with high water content are more prone to splitting regardless. If yours consistently burst, drop to 360°F (180°C) and add 3 minutes.

Do you need oil?

No. Sausages render plenty of their own fat, and added oil just pools in the drawer and smokes.

Will it smoke?

It can, for the same reason bacon does — rendered fat dripping onto the hot drawer floor beneath the element. Fatty sausages produce enough to matter.

Pour 2–3 tablespoons of water into the bottom drawer before cooking. The fat drips into the water instead of onto hot metal. Empty and refill between batches.

How many fit?

Basket size Full-size sausages
3–4 qt (3–4 L) 3–4
5–6 qt (5–6 L) 5–6
7–8 qt (7–8 L) 8–10
Dual basket, per drawer 4

A single layer with a gap between each. Sausages touching stay pale where they meet and take longer, because the contact surface gets no air.

Can you cook them from frozen?

Yes — 360°F (180°C) for 18–22 minutes. Separate them once they loosen, around 5 minutes in. Lower heat prevents the casing splitting while the centre is still frozen.

Cooking a full breakfast

Sausages take the longest, so they go first. Add bacon at the 5-minute mark and it finishes with them. Eggs and tomatoes need a separate accessory dish and go in for the last 6–8 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature for sausages in an air fryer?
380°F, or 195°C, for 12–15 minutes with one turn.

What internal temperature should sausages reach?
160°F (71°C) for pork and beef, 165°F (74°C) for chicken and turkey.

Should I prick sausages before air frying?
No. It releases fat and moisture and makes them drier. Lower the temperature instead if they split.

Can I cook sausages from frozen?
Yes — 360°F (180°C) for 18–22 minutes, separating them once they loosen.

Why is my air fryer smoking?
Rendered fat on the hot drawer floor. Add 2–3 tablespoons of water to the drawer before cooking.

Do sausages need turning?
Once, at the halfway point. They are round, so a quarter turn each time browns them more evenly than a full flip.
