Air fry bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs at 400°F (200°C) for 22–25 minutes, skin side up, flipping once. That converts from the standard 400°F, 35-minute oven method. Cook to at least 165°F (74°C) — but thighs are better at 175–185°F.
How does the oven conversion work?
| Oven | Air fryer | |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 400°F / 200°C | 400°F / 200°C |
| Time | 35–40 min | 22–25 min |
| Turning | Once | Flip at 15 min, finish skin up |
| Preheat | Yes | Yes, 3 min |
Like wings, thighs keep the full oven temperature rather than dropping 25°F (-5°C). Skin needs high heat to render and crisp, and the fat content protects the meat from drying — so the time reduction does the work instead. Boneless skinless thighs, which have no skin to crisp, take the standard reduction to 375°F (190°C).
How long does it take by Cut?
| Cut | Temperature | Time | Turn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bone-in, skin-on | 400°F / 200°C | 22–25 min | At 15 min |
| Bone-in, skinless | 380°F / 195°C | 22–26 min | At 13 min |
| Boneless, skin-on | 400°F / 200°C | 18–20 min | At 11 min |
| Boneless, skinless | 375°F / 190°C | 16–20 min | At 9 min |
| Frozen, bone-in | 360°F / 180°C | 30–35 min | Twice |
| Drumsticks | 400°F / 200°C | 20–24 min | At 12 min |
What internal temperature should it reach?
165°F (74°C) is the safe minimum for poultry. Thighs are dark meat with far more connective tissue than breast, and they genuinely improve between 175°F and 185°F (80–85°C) as that collagen breaks down into gelatin. The meat becomes more tender, not less.
This is the opposite of chicken breast, where every degree past 165°F (75°C) costs moisture. If you are cooking both in one basket, they do not finish together — start the thighs first.
Measure at the thickest point, avoiding the bone, which reads hotter than the surrounding meat.
Why thighs are the best cut for an air fryer
They are forgiving in exactly the ways the appliance is unforgiving. The fat content means a few extra minutes does no harm, the skin crisps hard in circulating air, and the uneven shape that causes problems for breast is irrelevant when the target temperature is a range rather than a point.
If someone is trying an air fryer for the first time, thighs are the cut most likely to work.
How many fit?
| Basket size | Bone-in thighs |
|---|---|
| 3–4 qt (3–4 L) | 2–3 |
| 5–6 qt (5–6 L) | 4 |
| 7–8 qt (7–8 L) | 5–6 |
| Dual basket, per drawer | 3 |
Skin side up, not touching. Thighs pressed together stay pale and soft where they meet, and the trapped area lags on internal temperature.
Do you need oil?
No, for skin-on. The skin renders its own fat, which is the main reason this cut works so well. A light spray helps skinless thighs, which otherwise dry at the surface.
Should you start skin up or skin down?
Skin down first, then flip so it finishes skin up. The final minutes facing the fan are what crisp it. Starting skin up means the underside sits in rendered fat for the whole cook and stays soft.
When do you add sauce?
In the last 3–4 minutes only, for anything sugary — barbecue, honey, teriyaki. Applied at the start, the sugars scorch onto the basket long before the meat is done. Dry rubs go on before cooking.

Frequently asked questions
What temperature for chicken thighs in an air fryer?
400°F, or 200°C, for 22–25 minutes for bone-in, skin-on. Boneless skinless goes lower at 375°F.
What internal temperature should chicken thighs reach?
165°F (74°C) minimum for safety, 175–185°F (80–85°C) for better texture as the connective tissue renders.
Can I cook thighs from frozen?
Yes — 360°F (180°C) for 30–35 minutes, checking the temperature in two places. Lower heat prevents the outside overcooking while the centre thaws.
Why is my skin not crisp?
Usually moisture or crowding. Pat the skin dry before seasoning, and make sure the thighs are not touching.
Can I cook thighs and breast together?
Not to the same finish. Breast is done at 165°F (75°C) and dries beyond it; thighs are better well past that. Start the thighs 5 minutes earlier and pull the breast first.
Do I need to flip drumsticks too?
Yes, once, and they benefit from a quarter turn as well since they are round rather than flat.
