To convert an air fryer time to a microwave, divide the air fryer time by about 3 and use full power — a 9-minute air fryer cook becomes roughly 3 minutes in a 1,000W microwave. The food will be heated through but will not be crisp, because a microwave cannot brown.

How does wattage change the time?

|---|---|
| 700W | 1.40 |
| 800W | 1.25 |
| 900W | 1.10 |
| 1,000W | 1.00 (reference) |
| 1,200W | 0.85 |
Why is this conversion approximate?
Because the two appliances share no mechanism. An air fryer heats the surface with moving hot air and lets that heat conduct inward. A microwave excites water molecules throughout the food at once, heating from within, with the cavity air staying near room temperature. A time ratio is the only bridge available, and it is a rough one.
When is this conversion worth making?
When speed matters more than texture, and when the food has no crust to lose. Soups, sauces, rice, steamed vegetables, casseroles and plated leftovers all reheat perfectly well in a fraction of the time.
What should you not convert?
Anything crisp. Fries, wings, breaded items, pizza, pastry and roast potatoes all come out worse in a microwave — the steam driven out of the interior lands in the crust and softens it. If texture is the point, use the air fryer and accept the extra minutes.
Can you use both?
Yes, and it is usually the better answer. Microwave for two-thirds of the estimated time to heat the interior, then finish in the air fryer at 400°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes to restore the surface. This beats either appliance alone on anything dense with a crust.

Frequently asked questions
How long in a microwave is 10 minutes in an air fryer?
About 3 minutes at full power in a 1,000W microwave, though the result will differ in texture rather than simply in time.
Will my food be crisp?
No. Microwaves cannot brown food — the reactions that produce browning need a hot dry surface, and a microwave heats water rather than the surface.
Can I microwave then crisp in the air fryer?
Yes, and for dense foods this is the fastest route to a good result. Microwave two-thirds of the way, then 3–5 minutes at 400°F (205°C).
Does covering the food help?
For moisture retention, yes. For anything you want dry, no — cover for soups and rice, leave uncovered for anything you plan to finish in the air fryer.
