Air fry bacon at 375°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes for regular cut, or 10–12 minutes for thick cut. That converts from the standard 400°F, 15-minute oven method — reduce the temperature by 25°F (15°C) and the time by 20%. No flipping needed.
How does the oven conversion work?
| Oven | Air fryer | |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 400°F / 200°C | 375°F / 190°C |
| Time | 12–18 min | 8–12 min |
| Turning | None | None |
| Preheat | Yes | Optional |
Bacon is one of the few foods where preheating is optional. Starting from cold renders the fat more gradually, which some people prefer for a chewier result; a preheated basket gives a crisper one.
How long does it take by Cut and Doneness?
| Cut | Chewy | Crisp | Very crisp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular cut | 7–8 min | 9–10 min | 11 min |
| Thick cut | 9–10 min | 11–12 min | 13–14 min |
| Streaky (UK) | 6–7 min | 8–9 min | 10 min |
| Back bacon (UK) | 7–8 min | 9–10 min | 11 min |
| Turkey bacon | 7–8 min | 9–10 min | 11 min |
| Pancetta, cubed | 6–7 min | 8 min | 9 min |
Check from the earlier end of the range. Bacon goes from perfect to burnt in about ninety seconds, and every batch varies with fat content.
The smoke problem — read this before you start
Bacon renders a lot of fat, and that fat drips onto the hot drawer floor directly beneath the heating element. It smokes, sometimes heavily, and in a small kitchen it will set off a smoke alarm.
This is the most common complaint about air frying bacon, and it is entirely preventable:
- Pour 2–3 tablespoons of water into the bottom drawer before cooking. The rendered fat drips into the water instead of onto hot metal. This is the single most effective fix.
- Alternatively, put a slice of bread underneath the basket to absorb the drippings.
- Do not overfill. More bacon means more fat than the drawer can hold.
- Empty the drawer between batches. Accumulated fat from batch one will smoke during batch two.
Do not use foil to line the drawer unless your manual permits it — foil that blocks airflow or lifts into the element is a genuine hazard rather than a nuisance.
How much fits?
| Basket size | Slices per batch |
|---|---|
| 3–4 qt (3–4 L) | 3–4 |
| 5–6 qt (5–6 L) | 4–6 |
| 7–8 qt (7–8 L) | 6–8 |
| Dual basket, per drawer | 3–4 |
Bacon must lie in a single layer without overlapping. Overlapped slices fuse together and stay soft where they touch. Slices can be halved to fit more in without stacking.
Do you need to flip it?
No. This is one of the genuine advantages over a frying pan — the circulating air cooks both sides at once. Bacon in an oven usually needs turning; in an air fryer it does not.
Why is my bacon curling up?
The fat renders and contracts faster than the meat. Two options: lay the slices flat and accept some curl, which is normal, or weigh them down with a metal rack placed on top. Do not use anything that blocks airflow across the surface.
Curling also gets worse as the basket fills, because the fan pushes loose ends around.
Can you cook bacon from frozen?
Yes, though separating the slices is the difficulty. Cook the block at 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes, then prise the slices apart as they loosen, spread them out, and continue for the normal time. Expect a slightly less even result than from fresh.
What about the rendered fat?
Once the drawer cools, the fat can be poured off and kept for cooking — it is the same product as any rendered bacon fat. Do not pour it down a sink drain, where it solidifies.
If you used the water method, let the mixture cool and separate first; the fat lifts off the top as a solid layer.
Reheating cooked bacon
350°F (175°C) for 2–3 minutes brings refrigerated bacon back to crisp. Watch it closely — already-cooked bacon has no fat left to render and burns quickly.

Frequently asked questions
What temperature for bacon in an air fryer?
375°F, or 190°C, for 8–10 minutes for regular cut. No flipping required.
Why is my air fryer smoking with bacon?
Rendered fat is dripping onto the hot drawer floor. Add 2–3 tablespoons of water to the drawer before cooking, and empty it between batches.
Do I need to preheat for bacon?
Optional. A preheated basket gives crisper bacon; starting cold renders the fat more gradually for a chewier result.
Can I stack bacon in the basket?
No. Overlapping slices fuse and stay soft where they touch. Halve the slices if you need more in one batch.
Is air fried bacon healthier?
It renders out more fat than pan frying and the fat drains away rather than being reabsorbed, so the cooked slice carries less. The bacon itself is unchanged.
How do I cook a whole pack?
In batches, emptying the drawer between each. Hold finished batches on a plate and re-crisp everything for 1 minute at the end.
